Transforming the Research Culture: Moving from a Compliance Model to Embedding Responsible Conduct in Research
ASU will expand its current federally mandated training in the use of human subjects in research by developing ongoing workshops to be offered each semester, and by fostering the adoption of the Web-based “Collaborative IRB Training Initiative” (CITI) administered by the University of Miami, as a complement to the NIH online tutorial now in use.
A speaker series will be established, featuring four presentations a year by national leaders in the area of research ethics, which will be coupled with panel discussions that include ASU faculty. The speakers will participate in a “Journal Club” luncheon, which will provide an informal setting for discussions with doctoral students and post-doctoral fellows.
Key faculty will conduct a series of curriculum development workshops, for which they will together devise case studies in advance of the discussion sessions. Graduate students will be able to enroll in a one-credit seminar, offered by the Division of Graduate Studies, that will have these workshop discussions as its core. At the end of each semester, the case studies used in the workshops will be revised and compiled for use in training modules for courses across campus.
An RCR Web site will be established for posting of case studies, resource links, and RCR activity opportunities. Expected learning outcomes of the workshops will be defined and assessed prior to, and after, student participation, and CITI performance will be assessed by a learning-outcome survey.
As the national advocate for graduate education, CGS serves as a resource for policymakers and others on issues concerning graduate education, research, and scholarship. Based in Washington, DC, the organization provides its members with regular updates and analyses of legislative and regulatory proposals and policies that affect graduate education.
