The Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) hosts two Dean-in-Residence programs.
The Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) established its Dean-in-Residence (DIR) Program in 1983. The program offers an opportunity for graduate deans, associate, or assistant deans to spend an academic year at the Council's Washington D.C. office. Each year one dean is selected from CGS member institutions to work with the CGS staff and participate in the ongoing work of the Council.

The Council of Graduate Schools and the Division of Graduate Education at the National Science Foundation created the CGS/NSF Dean-in-Residence Program in 2001. The goal of the program is to support ongoing and substantive communications between senior administrators for graduate education and the NSF. The program is an opportunity for an outstanding graduate dean to share with NSF the insights, perspectives, and the practical experience of a senior administrator at a research university. In turn, the dean communicates NSF’s perspective on graduate education with graduate deans and with science and engineering faculty more broadly.
