The CGS/NSF Dean-in-Residence Program was created to provide a unique mechanism for ongoing and substantive communications between senior administrators at our universities providing graduate education and the National Science Foundation (NSF), a major funder of graduate support programs. The program is a distinct opportunity for an outstanding graduate dean to bring to the NSF insights, perspectives, and the practical experience of a senior administrator at a research university. In turn, the Dean-in-Residence will share with the graduate dean community, as well as the broader science and engineering community, perspectives on graduate education and the NSF role.
Collaborative networking with program officers and senior administrators across NSF is a central role for the Dean-in-Residence, with the position housed in NSF's Division of Graduate Education under the Directorate for Education and Human Resources. The Dean-in-Residence is expected to contribute significantly to planning for future NSF program activities and initiatives. The Dean-in-Residence will be an active participant in CGS programs and activities and will develop programs to discuss NSF graduate support at CGS forums, including the summer orientation of new deans and annual and regional meetings of deans. This is a 12-month appointment starting September 1, 2013. Every effort will be made to complete the selection process as soon as possible, with the review of applications to begin in February 2013. The dean's current salary will be provided, subject to overall constraints of the program budget. The home institution is expected to continue providing a benefits package during the year in residence.
