International graduate admissions decline for first time in five years
International graduate admissions decline for first time in five years

(8/20/09)

Offers of admission from U.S. graduate schools to prospective international students fell 3% from 2008 to 2009, the first decline since 2004, a new CGS survey has found.
The decrease was driven by 16% declines in offers to students from both India and South Korea.

Growth in applications and admissions was stronger for domestic students. While 75% of graduate schools received more applications from prospective U.S. students in 2009 than 2008, just 55% received more international applications.  The change in domestic applications was a median 8% increase at responding institutions.
